Beard oil recipe - Dr. Axe

Facial hair has become quite popular over the past few years. Even campaigns such as Movember and Decembeard, for prostate awareness, have made the beard more popular. The New York Times published an article stating that the beard has become quite common in professional settings. That brings even more reason for good hygiene with the beard! Yes, you may have to give thought to how you manage that beard based on what your office environment is.

For some, growing a beard is not easy and for others, it comes so fast that it is a challenge to keep up with it. But for those that sport the beard, taking good care of it is important; in fact, most beards need daily care or they go from a sexy look to a scruffy and unkempt look. You need to wash, trim and condition it to help keep it well-groomed. So, yes, beard maintenance is crucial if you plan to wear one.

The good news is that it does not have to be costly to do so, and you definitely do not need to buy an expensive beard maintenance kit. Have you heard of beard oil? Beard oil is very easy to make yourself with just a few ingredients. The best beard oil moisturizes your beard using ingredients such as coconut oil for the beard. Coconut oil will soften it, allowing you to tame it and reduce itchiness. In addition, beard oil provides hydration to your skin. You want the beard to look shiny and well-groomed, instead of dusty and shaggy.

Now I will show you how to make beard oil as well as how to use beard oil.

First, get your bottle ready. We are going to keep it simple by making it right in the bottle. Now, let’s add the jojoba oil. Jojoba is an emollient, making it perfect for soothing the skin and unclogging hair follicles. Additionally, it’s an effective skin moisturizer.

Next, add the sweet almond oil and the coconut oil. Sweet almond oil is commonly used for homeopathic and cosmetic purposes. Having a light texture that easily absorbs into skin, sweet almond oil is great for dry skin. Meanwhile, coconut oil kills bacteria, keeping acne at bay, while hydrating the skin.

Now for the essential oils. Let’s start with cedarwood essential oil, which has an earthy aroma with slightly sweet notes. It reduces skin irritation due to its antiseptic properties and even has aromatherapy benefits for helping with depression. Did you know that cedarwood symbolizes a source of protection, wisdom and abundance? That makes it an even better choice for that beard.

And last, but certainly not least, let’s add the sandalwood essential oil. Sandalwood oil is commonly known for its woodsy, sweet smell and increases a sense of calmness while providing greater mental clarity.

Now that all ingredients are in the bottle. Tightly screw on the cap and give it a good shake. You now have your very own homemade beard oil recipe.

To apply it, put a few drops into your hands and rub them together, then rub your hands through your beard and on the cheeks. If you have an eyedropper bottle, you can use the dropper and put it directly onto the beard. Massage it throughout the beard with your hands or a hairbrush. Finish with brushing the beard so that it is neatly groomed. That’s it!

Apply in morning, after your shower, for a soft shiny beard and again, just before sleep, to get the conditioning benefits overnight.
