Simple tart vanilla bean frozen yogurt – top it with fruit for a super delicious dessert!
A few summers ago, the husband and I (no babe yet) were at my sister-in-law’s home for one of her amazing dinners. After dinner she made some type of fruity frozen yogurt that we all went nuts over. It was honestly the best frozen yogurt I’ve ever had and the husband agreed.
He mentioned about five different times how we needed the recipe, needed an ice cream maker, and needed to make it often!We finally got an ice cream maker, and my sweet sister-in-law emailed us the recipe. We’ve made that frozen yogurt dozens of time and now I think it’s the babe that loves it the very most. He’s too impatient to even wait for the ice cream maker to finish.
We sit by the churning ice cream maker, scoop out, and then devour spoonfuls of half-set up yogurt. I’m convinced the babe has a special talent of not getting brain freezes, because he can eat this stuff (and big spoonfuls of it) with no breaks.
Since being pregnant, I started craving frozen yogurt before the temperatures were even acceptable to be eating it (is that even a thing? Nevermind. The weather is always appropriate to eat frozen yogurt!) We’ve made several batches of the fruity frozen yogurt when I decided it was time to slightly adapt it and try a plain tart yogurt. (With loads of fruit mixed in, naturally.)
The recipe is pretty similar to the original, just with a little more sugar and a vanilla bean paste which honestly makesthis yogurt. The vanilla bean paste is made by Nielsen-Massey in case you are curious and it packs in such a full-vanilla flavor as well as the little specks of vanilla bean that just make the yogurt pretty! If you don’t have a vanilla bean paste, definitely use real vanilla beans. An imitation vanilla will probably leave a quite flavorless and even more tart yogurt that you may not enjoy as much.
With so few ingredients, you’ll want to make sure you have the best ingredients for optimal taste. Get a good yogurt that you know you’ll love. I recommend a high quality full-fat Greek vanilla yogurt because it will make for a creamier and more flavorful yogurt. I also would stick with the heavy whipping cream to ensure that this yogurt sets up well.
And of course, the more fruit chunks to stir in the yogurt, the better. Or do chopped candy bars, cereal, and fruity treats — you’ll be amazed how much it tastes like an authentic fro-yo place!
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 container (32 ounces) full-fat vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
- 1 cup white superfine sugar
- Toppings such as fresh fruit chopped candy/cookies, cereal, etc.
- In a large blender, mix together the first four ingredients. Blend until completely combined.
- (If your blender isn’t large enough, do this in batches).
- TIP: If you don’t have superfine sugar, pulse regular sugar a few times in a food processor and then sift it through a strainer. Don’t pulse it too much of you’ll have a powdered sugar.
- Pour the mixture into a prepared ice cream maker and follow ice cream maker directions to chill the yogurt.
Once it is done, you can transfer the mixture to an airtight container and freeze it to make a more solid mixture or eat it right away (I definitely prefer it right away)
- Mix in fresh fruit, chopped candy, cereal, etc. into the frozen yogurt.
